During Thursday’s plenary sitting, the August house approved a proposal to support FUFA and the football associations of Tanzania to field a joint bid to CAF to host the AFCON 2027 in East Africa.
“Parliament has approved a proposal to support FUFA and the F. A of Tanzania to field a joint bid to CAF to host the AFCON 2027 in East Africa,” read a tweet shared by the Parliament watch, a handle which shares proceedings in the plenary.
BACKGROUND.
In June 2022, CAF president Patrice Motsepe on a two-day visit to Uganda, met President Yoweri Museveni at State House Nakasero and promised to make a humble contribution to the country’s football development.
Motsepe had also met Anita Among, the speaker of Parliament and had been informed of Uganda’s interest in handing in a joint bid with Tanzania to host the AFCON 2027, which Motsepe affirmed to support.
“I was told that Uganda and Tanzania are keen to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in these two beautiful countries,” Motsepe told a press briefing.
“As CAF President, I have to support all the 54-member associations equally, and I must say that I would personally not only just welcome but encourage a joint hosting bid.”
“It will make a huge contribution to football development in Uganda and Tanzania not only in promoting football development but also other areas like tourism, investment and trade,” he added.
MUSEVENI COMMITS.
When Motsepe visited President Yoweri Museveni at the State Lodge in Nakasero, Museveni committed to supporting football and supports in Uganda,
“We have not supported sports as much as we would have wanted except for providing peace,” Museveni stated.
“We are going to improve, and it will be serious support.”
In April 2023, CAF notified its member associations that the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 bidding process had been opened.
Uganda currently doesn’t have a CAF-certified stadium that can host classified A matches, with only Vipers’ St Mary's Stadium allowed to host CAF inter-club matches.
It remains to be seen which stadiums FUFA will indicate in the bid.
