After the large match-fixing scandal when he was head coach of Belgian club Lierse, Put was charged by the Brussels Correctional Tribunal court.

Newly appointed Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put Joseph is not a man short of controversy and has had a bit of dirt in his coaching career.

He was one of more than a dozen managers, players, coaches and agents charged in connection with a huge match-fixing scandal between 2004-2005 in his homeland, Belgium.

After the large match-fixing scandal when he was head coach of Belgian club Lierse, Put was charged by the Brussels Correctional Tribunal court.

In June 2014, the Brussels court imposed a two-year sentence in prison on Put.

However, after appeal, it was revealed that it was a suspended sentence.

In that case, according to Belga, Put allowed a Chinese businessman Zheyun Ye, to bribe players when he was coach of Lierse.

The 67-year-old allegedly conspired with the Lierse players, who were paid to lose matches deliberately.

Meanwhile, in August 2019, in another incident, the Guinea Football Federation (Feguifoot) placed a life ban on Put, who had been their coach months earlier.

As per the BBC, Feguifoot's ethics commission ruled that Put had allegedly breached the institution's code of ethics and its code of discipline.
