Former Harambee Stars winger Paul Were has remained tight-lipped on his future after helping Mathare United secure promotion back to the top flight of Kenyan football
Were has been a pivotal figure for Mathare United since joining mid-season, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists.
His outstanding performance has helped the team return to the FKF Premier League at the first time of asking. Mathare returned to the top after beating Darajani Gogo 3-0 on Friday.
Despite his significant contributions to Mathare United's success, Were's future with the club is in limbo as his contract comes to an end.
The winger remains focused on finishing the season strong but is contemplating his next move.
“When things are going well, sometimes you might be tempted to talk big but for me, I am calm,” Were told Capital Sport.
“I just want to first focus on finishing these three games and then from there, we see what comes off. I am yet to make a decision. But I will do that at the end of the season,” he noted.
The former AFC Leopards star returned to Mathare United after a stint with Rayon Sports in Rwanda, driven by passion and circumstances that thwarted his plans to return to Europe.
“Unfortunately, when I left Rwanda, the windows in Europe were already closed and I want to thank the Mathare family led by former coach Odipo (Leonard) because they believed in me and gave me a chance.
“For me, this was like coming back home and giving back to them. Coach Kim (Francis Kimanzi) has also come back and pushed us really well,” Were, nicknamed ‘Maldez’, explained.
Were's calm approach hints at a potential departure, yet leaves room for the possibility of continuing with Mathare United. His future decision will be influenced by the club's performance and the opportunities that arise post-season.
However, his statements suggest he is weighing his options, considering both his personal career goals and the club’s future.

“This will be a big thing for me (winning the NSL). I have won the FKF Premier League with Tusker, I have won the FKF Cup with AFC Leopards, and now winning with Mathare will be huge because I will have won all Cups on offer in Kenya,” Were told Capital Sport.
As Mathare United prepares for its final push in the NSL, the team's fans and management will be eagerly awaiting Were's decision.
