The popular commentator will be Sky Sports' voice of the Premier League after Tyler's departure from the broadcaster after more than 30 years of service
Popular football commentator Peter Drury will replace Martin Tyler at Sky Sports, the British broadcaster has confirmed.
In what may well prove to be a popular move, the 55-year-old – currently the voice of the Premier League on US broadcaster NBC Sports – will become Sky's main commentator after Tyler, 77, did not have his contract renewed.
Drury, who began his broadcast career on local radio in Leeds in 1990, will continue to present for the US audience, it is understood. NBC is owned by Comcast, which also owns Sky.
Popular with viewers, he is held in high regard by many and is viewed as a natural successor to Tyler, who departed after 33 years with Sky.
It is expected that Drury will focus on one game a week for the broadcaster, which would be on Sunday, Monday or midweek.
Tyler, who covered numerous major tournaments and whose commentary on Sergio Aguero's dramatic, title-winning goal for Manchester City in 2012 is one of the Premier League's key moments, is not retiring.
“Drury has over 30 years of experience across TV and radio and will join a team of Sky Sports commentators including Rob Hawthorne, Bill Leslie, Seb Hutchinson, Dan Mann, Gary Weaver and Ian Crocker for the new campaign,” Sky Sports said via a statement on Sunday confirming his appointment.
Drury, who has won multiple broadcasting awards including Football Supporters' Association Commentator of the Year for three of the last four seasons, said: "I'm massively excited to be joining Sky's outstanding roster of commentators. To be working on the best games week in week out with a broadcaster that has told the Premier League story since the very beginning feels like the opportunity of my career and I can't wait to get started."
Sky Sports director of football Gary Hughes said: "We're looking forward to welcoming Peter Drury to Sky Sports. Peter's one of the game's most poetic commentators and will bring great energy and enthusiasm as well as his award-winning broadcasting experience to our unrivalled coverage of the Premier League."
Drury, also a winner of the prestigious Sports Journalists' Association Sports Commentator of the Year award in 2020, has previously worked for BBC, ITV, Premier League Productions and BT Sport.
