Police have launched an investigation into alleged assault after Sky Sports pundits Micah Richards and Roy Keane were involved in an altercation with a fan during Arsenal's clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

The investigation was launched after the fan allegedly aimed a headbutt at the former Manchester United captain.

Footage emerged on social media on Sunday night, appearing to show Richards speaking to a man while grabbing the front of his shirt with his two hands, while a young woman looks on.

According to a Sky statement: "Micah Richards was acting to diffuse a situation."

A man wearing a suit is then seen trying to separate the pair before Keane moves across and also appears to grab the male's shirt.

It is understood the incident occurred during the match, prior to Arsenal's winning goals, as the pair attempted to make their way down to the pitch for the post-match portion of Sky's broadcast.

Arsenal have confirmed that the police are investigating the matter according to a spokesman who told Mirror Football that the club was made ‘aware’ of the situation.

"We are aware of an incident that took place during our match against Manchester United on Sunday. The Metropolitan Police is conducting an investigation into the matter and we are fully cooperating with their enquiries,” the spokesperson said.

Richards retired from football in 2019 after spells with Manchester City, Fiorentina, and Aston Villa before embarking on a successful punditry career.

Keane also joined Sky in 2019 and continues to be a big hit with his no-nonsense punditry style. He has also regularly covered live matches for ITV during recent international tournaments.

Arsenal won the encounter at the Emirates 3-1 thanks to two late goals from Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus to take them into fifth in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Keane was quick to praise Arsenal during his post-match sentiments, tipping the 13-time league champions the closest outfit to challenge Manchester City for the title this season.

"It is unfair to compare them to Man City but last season they were the best of the rest. I would say they are the strongest group again amongst the other teams."

"It was a big win today and will give them momentum, some players making an impact from the bench. The feel-good factor will be back but if they had dropped points against United, it would have been a huge setback. They have a spring in their step now."
