The Portuguese center-back, 41, leaves behind an impressive legacy, having played for arguably the biggest club in the world.

At Real Madrid, Pepe formed an iconic defensive partnership with Sergio Ramos, and along with Cristiano Ronaldo, won three La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies in 334 appearances.

His success didn't stop there, as he also enjoyed a distinguished international career with Portugal, lifting the European Championship in 2016 and the Nations League.

Even in his final days on the pitch, Pepe showed no signs of slowing down, impressing fans with vintage performances at Euro 2024.

Portugal were eventually knocked out in the quarter-finals against France, a result that likely prompted the need for the defender to make a decision.

Meanwhile, his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo is yet to decide on his international future after his disappointing showing at EURO 2024, with many speculating he could play until 2026.
