Kamau has created a reputation for being a developer type of coach in his 12-year stint at the topflight of Kenyan football, a period in which he has also coached the Kenya U20 side, but has revealed it is time he went for the title.

“Myself, I am not because I think this being my 12th year in the Kenyan Premier League, I think on my side I should be in a position to start (competing),” Kamau said.
“After all the work I have been doing developing players, I think it is time that I tried to chase a title, so for myself, I think I have underdeveloped.”
Kamau has revealed that he does “not fear losing” as it is only a phase of football but made it clear his side will keep plugging away.

Kamau's stellar career on the topflight stage took off at Thika United as a goalkeeper. He then courted coaching in 2010 when he was appointed to polish up the club's goalkeeping department.
Kamau was later named coach of the club’s junior side and assistant coach to the senior side, where he deputised Juma Abdalla. He guided Thika United's academy side to the KPL Under-19 title.

In December 2014, Kamau left the club for KPL debutants Posta Rangers following the expiry of Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omolo’s contract as the Mailmen's gaffer.
He left the mailmen in 2018 after landing a role at KCB FC, who were then fighting for promotion in the second tier.
Kamau replaced Leonard Saleh who parted ways with the team at the end of the 2017 season after failing to attain their objective of gaining promotion back to the top tier.
