The Metropolitan Police have submitted a complete file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) regarding a Premier League footballer accused of rape.

The international footballer in his 30s, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, has been on extended bail as investigations continue into allegations made by multiple women.

Initially arrested on suspicion of rape, he was rearrested while in custody over two more allegations dating back to April and June 2021.

However, police confirmed no further action would be taken regarding the June 2021 incident due to a technicality.

Despite this, the investigation deepened, with the player being questioned again in November 2022.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated as per The Guardian, “A full file has been passed to the CPS, and detectives continue to work with prosecutors.

“Those who have come forward continue to receive support from Met officers.”

Reports also indicate that more victims may have stepped forward in 2023, bringing the total number of formal accusations to at least four.

Reports from the aforementioned outlet revealed that the club was aware of allegations as far back as autumn 2021 but allowed the player to continue his career.

As the CPS reviews the evidence, the spotlight remains firmly on both the player and his club.

Whether charges will be brought remains unclear, but the case has already ignited debates around the footballing world.
