Coventry have released defender Fankaty Dabo after his penalty cost them a place in the Premier League next season
Championship club Coventry City have released defender Fankaty Dabo who missed the crucial penalty that allowed Luton Town to gain Premier League promotion over them.
Coventry release Dabo after playoff penalty pain
Dabo was tasked with Coventry’s first penalty in sudden death during the Premier League playoff against Luton, but the English full-back could only watch as his effort went high and wide of the goalpost.
His miss came after Luton’s David Potts had scored his penalty and meant the end of the penalty shootout, ending Coventry’s dream for a place in the Premier League in the 2023/24 season.
Fankaty Dabo leaves Coventry at the end of his contract
After his unfortunate miss, Dabo will now leave Coventry in the summer of 2023, although he may have been allowed to leave even if the Sky Blues had made it to the Premier League.
Dabo’s current contract runs out in June 2023, and he was one of seven Coventry players released from the club with the end of their contracts in sight.
The English-born full-back of Sierra Leonian descent had been a bit-part player during the 2022/23 season, especially after the loan signing of Brooke Norton-Cuffy from Arsenal in January and will now seek a new club after being released by Coventry.
Other players released include Julien Dacosta, Todd Kane, Sean Maguire, Michael Rose, Martyn Waghorn and Tyler Walker.
