The French giants want a marquee signing to ease the pain of losing Mbappe in the summer and have identified one of Barcelona's top talents for a transfer at the end of the season
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is setting its sights on FC Barcelona's prodigious midfielder, Gavi, as they prepare for life after Kylian Mbappe.
According to reports from Peter Rutzler and Pol Ballus of The Athletic, the 19-year-old Spaniard has been identified as a key target for the French giants this summer, signaling the start of a new era at the club.
Barcelona unwilling to sell Gavi despite financial problems
Despite Barcelona's apparent reluctance to part ways with one of their most promising talents, the club's well-documented financial struggles may necessitate a reevaluation of their stance.
Gavi, a product of the esteemed La Masia academy, has become an integral part of Xavi’s team, amassing 111 appearances and earning 27 caps for the Spanish national team at a young age. His significant contribution to the team notwithstanding, Barcelona's precarious financial situation might compel the Catalan club to consider lucrative offers.
Adding a layer of complexity to any potential transfer is Gavi's current injury status. The midfielder is sidelined until the summer due to a cruciate ligament injury sustained in November. This unfortunate setback has temporarily halted the progress of one of Spain's brightest talents, but it hasn't dampened PSG's interest in securing his services.
Luis Enrique's Vision for PSG
PSG coach Luis Enrique views Gavi as a pivotal figure in his strategy to reshape the squad in anticipation of Mbappe's likely departure. The Parisian club, known for its ambitious transfer dealings, appears undeterred by the midfielder's injury and is eager to integrate him into their plans. Gavi's potential arrival in Paris could mark a significant shift in PSG's approach, focusing on building a team capable of sustaining success in the post-Mbappe era.
Gavi's contract with Barcelona, which runs until the end of the 2025/2026 season, coupled with his enormous potential, means that any transfer would command a substantial fee. PSG, with its financial might, is among the few clubs capable of meeting Barcelona's valuation. While it remains uncertain how Gavi views a potential move to PSG, such a transfer could potentially benefit all involved parties, provided the price is right.
