Atletico Madrid cruised to an emphatic 6-1 win against Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano, in LaLiga on Saturday night, March 4.
The hosts were looking to continue their impressive form in the league and move ahead of third-placed Real Sociedad in the standings.
Diego Simeone was also taking charge of his 613th match as Atletico Madrid coach, surpassing Luis Aragonés' record as the coach with the most matches in Atletico history.
And it was more of a goal fest at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday, in a contest that was largely one-sided.
The host kicked off the party in the 23rd minute after Antoine Griezmann found Memphis Depay who fired home to give Atletico a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, the Dutch forward grabbed a brace to double his side’s advantage with Sevilla yet to offer any real threat to the hosts.

However, the visitors created chances afterwards and soon roared back into the contest after Youssef El-Nesyri found the back of the net in the 39th minute.

Nesyri’s strike was the last real action of the first period as Atletico went into the break with a one-goal advantage
Second Half
The hosts dominated possession following the restart with some neat passage of plays.
Eventually, their ball retention soon paid off as they found a third, with Antoine Griezmann scoring a spectacular long-range effort to restore Atletico’s two-goal lead in the 53rd minute.

Sevilla never quite looked like they were going to recover and soon found themselves conceding again in the 69th minute after an easy tap-in from Yannick Carrasco to make it 4-1.
Diego Simeone’s men looked confident and sharp each time they were on the attack, with Jorge Sampaoli’s men having to fight for scraps all night.
Sevilla had an opportunity to pull one goal back in a game which already looked pretty much settled.
The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute but failed to capitalise as Ivan Rakitic missed from the spot.

Sevilla would eventually rue their missed opportunity as the hosts pounced once more with second half substitute Alvaro Morata grabbing his side’s fifth in what was a total demolition.
Things got worse for Sevilla as Papa Gueye was sent off in the 80th minute for a second bookable offense, leaving the visitors with 10 men on the pitch, with nothing to play for anymore really.

But Simeone’s men were not done yet, with Morata grabbing his brace in the 92nd minute of stoppage to further compound the visitors’ woes as it finished at the Wanda Metropolitano 6-1 in favour of Atletico Madrid.
The win has now seen Atletico Madrid move up to third on the summit ahead of Real Sociedad who were held to a draw against Cadiz earlier on Friday.
