Blues fans have taken some positives from the draw against Liverpool in the Premier League mid-table heavyweight clash.
Liverpool hosted Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, January 21, 2023 i matchweek 21 of the Premier League.
The Reds were hoping to bounce back from their shock upset at the Amex last time out.
Chelsea on the other hand, were hoping to build on their hard-fought win against Crystal Palace last weekend.
The Blues thought they had taken in an early lead after Kai Havertz reacted quickest to a rebound after a corner in the third minute.
However, Graham Potter’s celebration was cut short after a VAR review saw the goal chalked off for offside.
Three minutes later, Liverpool found a chance on the other end after Mohamed Salah played in Coady Gakpo, but the Dutch forward’s effort went well wide of the post.
Gakpo came close again in the 20th minute after a lovely footwork in the box but his finishing let him down once more.
Two minutes later, Lewis Hall found space in the box after being played through by Mason Mount, but the young defender couldn’t find the finish needed.
In the 32nd minute, Chelsea had another chance to finally break the deadlock after Benoit Badiashile’s headed effort proved an easy save for Alisson.
Chelsea kept creating the better chances but lacked the finish in the final third as both sides headed into the break with the scores deadlocked.
Second Half
Chelsea began the second half looking the brighter of the two sides and dominating possession in the early stages after the restart.
Graham potter opted to make the first change of the game bringing on the Blues January signing Mykhaylo Mudryk in the 50th minute to replace Lewis Hall.
Mudryk got straight into the action and found himself a golden opportunity the break the deadlock in the 64th minute.
But his effort from a rebound missed the target as the Blues were made to rue another missed chance after Hakim Ziyech has also spurned a chance wide four minutes earlier.
Liverpool came knocking themselves after Darwin Nunez missed a great chance having been played through on goal with Kepa Arrizabalaga proving up to the task.
Liverpool grew into the game and continued to dominate into the closing 10 minutes as second-half substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold nearly grabbed a potential winner after latching on to a rebound in the box.
After five minutes of added time, both sides had to settle for a draw with Graham Potter's men failing to really progress on the summit, sitting in 10th while Liverpool remain 8th.
