Nigerians ask Buhari to have mercy on former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Fregene.
Former Super Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeper Peter Fregene is in critical condition according to posts on social media.
The Flying Cat as Fregene is known is now 75 years old and living in abject poverty.
Photos of the Sapele-born goalkeeper surfaced on social media this week and went viral.
Peter Fregene needs help
The initial post that went viral made a mistake identifying Fregene as another Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai.
The mistake was identified and the post was corrected as Rufai is healthy and not in any harm.
Rufai has been involved in several campaigns with the 1994 Super Eagles team such as partaking in the 70th birthday celebration of former Lagos State Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for the 2023 general elections.
Fregene on the other hand is in critical condition and disabled. He desperately needs attention according to several sources that are aware of his condition.
The post about Fregene being unable to walk and needing a wheelchair while looking severely malnourished was noticed by several top personalities on social media.
The attention of the Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board has been called to Fregene's situation.
The Honorable Minister of Sport, Sunday Dare has also been encouraged to offer assistance to the former Super Eagles player.
A comparison was made to how the Nigerian football family came together to mourn the death of Brazilian legend Pele.
Several Super Eagles players were also tagged to provide help and possibly save his life at an old age.
