The Champions League holders are looking to refresh their team and have recognised one player that Arsenal are reportedly close to landing as the ideal candidate.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has been a wanted player among Europe’s best clubs for several years, but he has already rejected several offers, including one from Liverpool at the last minute.

Arsenal have reportedly convinced him to move, with Mikel Arteta eager to bring him to London. The Gunners tried to sign him two seasons ago, and this time, they are prepared to meet his €60 million release clause.

The deal was reported as a ‘done deal’ but latest news suggest that there could be a twist in the tale.

While Arsenal seem to be in pole position, Real Madrid have now emerged as serious contenders. Reports from Cadena Cope suggest that Los Blancos are getting "closer and closer" to signing Zubimendi. Unlike at Arsenal, he would be given a central role in Madrid’s midfield, a major selling point.

With Luka Modric nearing the end of his career, there is a role for Zubimendi in Madrid’s midfield, plus the prospect of remaining in his home country could be tempting.

While Arsenal offer familiarity with a growing Basque presence, Real Madrid’s prestige and trophy potential could be difficult to turn down.

At this time, it is all rumours, as there has been no concrete report that any club has gotten him to sign.
