Zambia Super League champions Red Arrows have geared up for a high-stakes encounter against FKF Premier League giants Gor Mahia in the opening match of the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Cup.

The match is slated for Wednesday, 10 July, under the floodlights of the Azam complex at 9pm East Africa Time.

Red Arrows' squad this season is notably robust, featuring key signings such as Angel Kieya Lubamba from Nchanga Rangers and Godfrey Ngwenya from Power Dynamos.

The Airmen's tactical acumen will be under scrutiny as they face a seasoned Gor Mahia side known for their resilience and tactical gameplay.

Speaking on the group stages, Red Arrow coach Chisi Mbewe highlighted the significance of the matchup against Gor Mahia.

“Tournaments like CECAFA can foster team cohesion and bonding, which is crucial for team spirit and morale, especially when transitioning between different competitions," he explained.

Red Arrows will also confront other formidable opponents in Group B, including Al Hilal from Sudan and Djibouti Telecom FC.

However, the opener against Gor Mahia is pivotal as it could very well determine the morale and momentum for the Airmen in subsequent games.

Injuries have slightly marred Red Arrows' squad depth with team captain Benedict Chepeshi, Chitiya Mususu, Twiza Chaibela, and Zephenia Phiri sidelined due to various injuries.

Despite these setbacks, the team remains optimistic about their prospects.

The return of striker Albert Kangwanda, although brief before his return to parent club Al Hilal FC of Sudan, could provide a much-needed boost against the Kenyan champions.

Lt Col Kambani Ronald Lungu, the club Chief Executive Officer, also stressed the importance of the tournament as a preparatory platform.

“Our participation in the CECAFA Cup is not just about competing but also about gaining a competitive edge and international exposure, which is crucial ahead of the 2024/25 season,” Lungu expressed.

Red Arrows will continue their campaign in the group stages with matches against Sudanese giants Al Hilal FC on Saturday, 13 July, and Djibouti side Telecom FC on Tuesday, 16 July.
