James's injury struggles

James has endured a frustrating season so far, missing 21 games across all competitions due to two separate hamstring injuries.

His first setback occurred during pre-season, followed by a brief return where he made four appearances before another hamstring injury in late November.

Chelsea's loss to Ipswich prevented them from moving into second place and closing the gap on league leaders Liverpool. They now sit fourth, only three points ahead of Newcastle.

James' limited playing time has impacted Enzo Maresca's side. He has only started three of his four appearances, totalling just 241 minutes without a goal contribution.

Disasi's struggles at right-back

With Reece James just recovering from injury, Enzo Maresca opted for centre-back Axel Disasi at right-back instead of Malo Gusto against Ipswich.

Disasi's performance was subpar, failing to win a single tackle and being partly responsible for Omari Hutchinson's decisive goal. He was subsequently substituted in the 77th minute.

James' update on his return to action

James posted a photo of himself on Instagram, originally shared by Chelsea's official account, with the caption "Happy New Year."

If Reece James' post is anything to go by, it could signal that he is back to full fitness and should be available for Chelsea's upcoming games, as the Blues have missed his experience and leadership.

Chelsea's recent form has been concerning, with no wins in their last three Premier League matches.

James' return to full fitness could be crucial for Chelsea's push for Champions League qualification.

Chelsea will begin the new year with an away fixture against Crystal Palace on Saturday, January 4th.
