Mikel Arteta’s side are in pole position to land marksman ahead of the Reds.

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign in-demand striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.

Arsenal’s interest in Gyokeres

According to Team Talk, the Gunners are set to make an opening offer of between £55m and £60m for the Swedish forward but it remains to be seen if the North London side’s bid is accepted.

Gyokeres has been in prolific form for Sporting, scoring 43 goals and providing 15 assists in just 50 games, and that impressive record has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Liverpool and Mikel Arteta’s team.

However, despite initial links, Liverpool are no longer pursuing a move for the 26-year-old, with Arne Slot focused on strengthening other areas of the squad, particularly in defence and midfield.

Arsenal's need for a new striker is more pressing, with the club looking to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title. Gyokeres is seen as an ideal fit for Arteta's system, and the club is prepared to pay a significant fee to secure his services.

What comes next?

Sporting are expected to demand a premium for their star striker, with his £100m release clause a starting point for negotiations.

Arsenal are currently on tour of the United States and have defeated Bournemouth and Manchester United
