Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane could miss the rest of the season, according to reports.

Manchester United could be without their main defensive pair, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, for the rest of the season due to injury.

Both players were substituted from the Europa League clash against Sevilla. Reports developing after the game suggest that both players are set for an injury layoff that would see them miss what is left of the campaign.

Varane and Martinez set for injury layoff

According to the Athletic, Manchester United's top two centre-backs in terms of league starts in the position, Martinez (24) and Varane (19), could be out of action for the remainder of the season.

Martinez was carried off the field in the 86th minute of the game by his compatriots in Sevilla jerseys, Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel after he went down injured.

The report states that he hurt his metatarsal and is expected to be out of action for the rest of the season.

The French World Cup winner, on the other hand, was subbed off at halftime due to injury. However, his situation is said to still be under evaluation, but there are concerns that the injury could sideline him in the final run-in.

The Red Devils are in the advanced stages of the Europa League and FA Cup and are in line to win a treble of cup competitions. Also, although unlikely, there is still a mathematical possibility that they can win the Premier League. An injury to the aforementioned defenders could significantly derail their season.

What Ten Hag said about it

Previously, Martinez, who has become a firm fan favourite since joining from Ajax last summer, was running with the ball towards the end of the game but suddenly went down under no pressure and began clutching the back of his right foot and ankle.

"We've seen Lisandro drops out after a moment where there was no opponent involved so it does not look great,” Ten Hag told BT Sport.

“I can't say how serious it is at this moment.”

The United boss also confirmed that the reason for withdrawing Raphael Varane at half-time was the result of an injury, the full extent of which is not yet known.
