Several reports indicate that Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi could be facing a long injury layoff
Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi reportedly faces an extended amount of time out on the sidelines due to injury, according to multiple sources.
The Athletic's Nottingham Forest reporter Paul Taylor has offered an update on the injury sustained by Awoniyi, claiming that the player will miss at least two months of football.
Awoniyi picked up a groin injury in the game against Southampton on January 4 in which the Nigerian scored the only goal for Nottingham Forest to seal a 1-0 away win.
Taiwo Awoniyi out for a long time
Paul Taylor tweeted that Nottingham Forest are now close to signing Newcastle striker Chris Wood as a replacement for the injured Awoniyi who he claims will be out of action for seven to eight weeks.
Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna has also claimed on Twitter that Awoniyi will be out of action for some months.
Although these reports remain unconfirmed by either the club or the player, Nottingham Forest's transfer activity this window suggests that Awoniyi may indeed be injured.
Nottingham Forest are reportedly close to signing NewZealand striker Chris Wood from Newcastle which only makes sense if Taiwo Awoniyi is unavailable.
According to The Athletic, Forest will sign Wood on an initial six-month loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season.
Taiwo Awoniyi is currently Nottingham Forest's top scorer with five goals in 19 games across all competitions, and the club will miss him as they battle to avoid instant relegation to the English Championship.
