The ex-Liverpool boss had reportedly decided to join Red Bull while coach of the Reds
Jurgen Klopp’s move to become Red Bull's Head of Soccer had been in the works long before his departure from Liverpool in May 2024.
Reports suggest that Klopp agreed to take on the role back in 2022, during a meeting with the late Red Bull founder, Dietrich Mateschitz.
Klopp’s emotional reason for joining Red Bull
The German gaffer, who was still managing Liverpool at the time, met with Mateschitz, who was terminally ill and passed away just weeks after their conversation.
It is believed that the meeting laid the foundation for Klopp's eventual shift into a global role overseeing Red Bull's football portfolio, which includes clubs like RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls.
It was reported that Mateschitz managed to convince Klopp to join the Red Bull team, with the former Dortmund boss making a promise to the Red Bull founder on his death bed.
Klopp excited for new mentorship role
Klopp has expressed excitement about moving away from direct team management and embracing a mentorship role within the Red Bull organization.
In a statement following his appointment, Klopp said: “After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this."
As Head of Soccer, Klopp will work closely with the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs, utilising his vast knowledge and experience to develop and support football talent across the globe.
Despite his excitement for his new role, Klopp still has an exit clause in his contract with Red Bull that will allow him coach the German national team.
