Italian football's governing body FIGC have explained the reasons for AS Roma's manager Jose Mourinho's 10-day match
The reasons for AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho’s 10-day Serie A ban have been revealed by the Serie A governing body FIGC, which explained the rationale behind the punishment handed down to the Portuguese gaffer.
Mourinho’s explosive post-match rant about Serie A referee punished
Following AS Roma’s 1-1 draw in Serie A against Monza in May, Mourinho was heavily critical of centre referee Daniele Chiffi, saying, “[He is] the worst referee I have ever encountered in my entire career.
“He is horrible, he makes no human connection with anyone, he has no empathy, he gives a red card to a player who slips because he is exhausted at the 96th minute.
“Unfortunately, this too is a sign of Roma’s weakness as a club, because we do not have the strength of other clubs who can say we don’t want this referee.”
FIGC give justifications for Mourinho’s punishments
The post-match comments earned Mourinho a 10-day suspension starting on the first day of the 2023/24 Serie A season as well as a €50,000 fine for both him and Roma.
The FIGC have explained the reasoning behind the punishments for Mourinho in a recent communication, saying, “The statements made by Mourinho to television and other media, without doubt, go over the limit of admissible criticism of referee Chiffi and constitute an open violation of Article 23, comma 1 of the sporting justice code.
“In his comments, Mourinho without doubt seriously damaged not just the reputation and prestige of referee Chiffi, including with personal comments, but also the federal organisation of referees, putting into doubt the mechanism of designation to games.”
The 60-year-old Portuguese manager will miss the start of Roma’s domestic and European campaigns after being suspended by both the Serie A and UEFA ahead of the 2023/24 campaigns.
