The NFF has unveiled Finidi George as the new coach of the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles, but there are question marks.

Finidi George's appointment as the new head coach of the Nigerian national football team has been met with skepticism after it was revealed he has signed just a one-year contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The legendary former winger was officially unveiled as the Super Eagles' new boss on Monday, replacing Jose Peseiro who departed after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Concerns Over Finidi's Nigeria National Football Team Deal

Following the unveiling, Nigerian journalists and fans have raised concerns that handing Finidi only a 12-month deal suggests a lack of faith and long-term planning from the NFF.

Journalist Osasu Obayiuwana took to Twitter questioning: "Wait a minute...@FinidiGeorge_FG was only given a ONE YEAR CONTRACT by @thenff to manage the @NGSuperEagles? Is this a joke or what?"

His post sparked a wave of criticism and confusion from Nigerian supporters over the short length of Finidi's contract.

One fan responded: "This is absolutely nonsense...When you employ a new manager it's only because; you've checked his track record or believe in his vision for the team. Therefore it's mandatory to give him enough time and support."

Another suggested: "He gets an automatic two years extension if he gets to the semi-final of AFCON 2025..."

While one cynic claimed: "Believe me they have foreign manager lined up to replace. Even this next 2 games might just be what they will use to judging if he doesn't get the result."

The 53-year-old George is one of Nigeria's all-time greats, winning the 1994 AFCON and playing at two World Cups during his 62-cap international career.

However, he is untried at the top level of management, having only just cut his teeth as Peseiro's assistant before taking interim charge for two recent friendlies.

Many feel George deserves more time and backing from the NFF to properly implement his philosophy and build a new era for the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles.

Nigeria has underachieved in recent years but beat the odds to reach the AFCON 2023 final in Ivory Coast amid scrutiny over the Peseiro regime.

With George's deal running only until after the 2025 AFCON in Ivory Coast, doubts are emerging over whether he will still be in charge for the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign should Nigeria get there.
