Rivers United would play Motema Pembe again, in their fourth group game in the competition, on Tuesday, March 7.
Rivers United secured their second win in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup by defeating Congo's DC Motema Pemebe 1-0 on Sunday.
The game played at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda, Angola was decided via a 53rd-minute goal via midfielder Paul Acquah.
It became the second group stage victory for the Nigerian champions, enough to see them go top of their group on Sunday.
Rivers United suffer depletion in first half
Rivers United suffered a demoralizing start to the game in Luanda as they were reduced to 10 men in the first 42 minutes of the match.
Before being dismissed, defender Ebube Duru picked up the first yellow card of the game before the half-hour hour, with Motema Pembe's Mpiani Mozinzi following his footsteps two minutes later.
Duru was dismissed for a second yellow card three minutes before halftime, but despite that, the Stanley Eguma-led side held out for a goalless first half.
Acquah gives Rivers United victory
The second half saw the Port Harcourt club start brightly with the first - and only goal of the game - Acquah, beating Motema Pembe's goalkeeper, Herve Lomboto.
In the 53rd minute, the Ghanaian winger was able to find the back of the net from a rebound after his initial header off Denis Ndasi’s flick was blocked by the keeper.
The win now sees Rivers United go top of Group B of the 2022/23 season, with the other game in the group seeing ASEC Mimosas beat Diables Noirs 2-0.
Rivers United will in their fourth game in the group, take on Motema Pembe again, on Tuesday, March 7.
