The Port Harcourt club will take on Congo's Motema Pembe in their next group game next Sunday.
Rivers United got their first points at the 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup following a 3-0 win over Cote d'Ivoire's ASEC Mimosas on Sunday.
Goals from Malachi Ohawuma, Ukeme Williams and Denis Ndasi in either half, were enough to give the Port Harcourt club a comfortable win in their second Group B game.
The 3-0 victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo came on the back of a setback the Nigerian champions had suffered in their opening group fixture, a week ago.
Ohuwuma launch Mimosas downfall
Prior to the fixture in Uyo, ASEC Mimosas had not won a game in Nigeria since their first visit in 1971 (vs Rangers, 0-1), losing in six of their last seven visits.
Sunday was going to be no different as the game started as early as the first minute for Rivers United. It was a sweet start for the Port Harcourt club as Ohawume succeeded in finding the back of the net off a sweet assist by Nwagua Nyima.
The pressure of the game died down over the past couple of minutes, but Rivers United kept going at their visitors and got rewarded for it eventually.
In the 42nd minute, Nyima was in the mix of things again, and this time, set up Williams who sent a brilliant strike into Mimosas' goal.
Ndasi seal home win
A return from the break saw Rivers United even more energized, so much so that they added a third just three minutes into the second half.
In the 48th minute, Ndasi rose highest to get his head to Gideon Duru's cross into the back, putting his attempt well off the reach of the ASEC Mimosas goalkeeper Charles Folly.
Following the victory, Rivers United now sit second in Group B with three points, pending the result of the group's other tie between Diables Noirs and Motema Pembe.
The Pride of Rivers will play Congo's Motema Pembe in their next group game next Sunday.
