Roma eased to a 3-0 win at home to Sheriff Tiraspol thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku, Andrea Belotti and Niccola Pisilli to round up the Europa League group stages.
The Romans came into the final group game already guaranteed a top-two finish but a win and Slavia Prague losing would have sent them top of the group and guaranteed a place in the Europa League round of 16.
Slavia Prague won their game 4-0 against Servette which meant Mourinho's team had to make do with a second-place finish and they would have to play for the right to advance to the round of 16.
The eight second-place Europa League teams have to play against all eight teams dropping down from the UEFA Champions League for a spot in the round of 16.

Roma started strong, taking the lead with 11 minutes on the clock when Nicola Zalewski picked out Romelu Lukaku to tap in his fifth goal of the Europa League campaign.

Roma doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Renato Sanches cleverly played in Zalewski, whose dinked effort grazed the fingertips of the goalkeeper but Andrea Belotti was on the line to bundle it in.
With the win already secured, Mourinho gave a debut to youngster Niccolò Pisilli and the 19-year-old repayed the faith with a goal in stoppage time, deflecting a low shot into the far corner to cap off the scoring.
