De Rossi pointed out that every time he shifted away from a three-man defence during these matches, improvements were visible. The decision to switch to a 4-3-3 formation during the Fiorentina game countered a potential defeat, according to De Rossi.
De Rossi noted the resistance from players towards Mourinho's established defensive strategies, likening the situation to a body rejecting a new organ.
Despite the team's initial comfort with a five-man defense structure, the shift to a more attacking formation has become essential. The shift reflects a change in tactical preferences, showing a departure from Mourinho's methods.
"We have to analyse when things aren’t working and the fact is after each of the Europa League games, we had a bad first half in the next Serie A match," he said, per GOAL.
"And every time I moved to a three-man defence and saw improvements. Well, I tried it from the start this time and evidently, that’s not the issue.
"Whenever I saw the team running on empty, I tried to move them back to a system they used for many years and felt comfortable with. I remember they were very difficult to score against when playing with five at the back.
"However, maybe they are rejecting that system now, like a body with a new organ! I felt like we could win it when we equalised and conceding the second goal was against the run of play, that could knock the wind out of our sails, but the penalty save kept us alive."
Roma's Revival under De Rossi
Since De Rossi took the helm from Mourinho, Roma has witnessed a significant improvement in their performance, winning six out of eight Serie A matches. This resurgence has propelled Roma to the fifth spot in the league, now just three points adrift of fourth-placed Bologna. These positive strides mark a promising trajectory for the team under De Rossi's leadership.
