What Martins said
Obagoal, now 40 and retired, was a renowned striker during his pomp, hence the nickname. While his ball-striking ability and dribbling skills were elite, his pace was his calling card.
The former Newcastle United forward zoomed past defenders for most of his 201 career goals, 18 of which came in the Super Eagles shirt, and today he jogged our memories.
The Nigerian football icon was CAF’s guest at the award earlier in the night, where, alongside Angolan legend Fabrice Akwa, he presented the African Goal of the Season to Angola’s Cristovao Mabulu.
At the event, Martins obliged ESPN's social media team when he was presented with an array of reputably fast footballers and tasked with naming those he thought were faster than him.
An unfazed Martins told the questioner he was markedly faster than Thierry Henry, Micky Van der Ven, Kyle Walker, and even Cristiano Ronaldo.
The answer did not change when the likes of Mohamed Salah, Arjen Robben and Gareth Bale were thrown at him. He maintained he was faster and asked, “You forgot about me?”
When Delima Ronaldo was named, Martins, who shared a dressing room with the Brazil legend at Inter, immediately dismissed the contest, saying, “I'm faster; he knows that.”
The former Shanghai Shenhua striker did not waver for the rest of the video’s length, dismissing names like Leroy Sane, Adama Traore, and Theo Walcott. He ended by asking the interviewer to go and verify with his teammates at Inter Milan.
