Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has weighed in on the everlasting GOAT debate
The never-ending debate over who is the greatest footballer of all time has once again been addressed by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, and his verdict is crystal clear.
The former Old Trafford star has played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and battled against Lionel Messi, yet when asked to pick between the two, he had no doubts about his choice.
Rooney chooses Messi over former teammate Ronaldo
Having shared a dressing room with Ronaldo at Manchester United between 2004 and 2009, Rooney is well aware of the Portuguese forward’s incredible ability and mentality.

The two formed a lethal partnership at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles and a Champions League together.
However, having faced Messi’s Barcelona, particularly the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals, where United suffered painful defeats, Rooney was in no doubt as to who the better player is.
During a Prime Video segment, Rooney was asked the golden question: “Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?” Without hesitation, he responded, “Lionel Messi.”
Rooney’s relentless support for Messi
This is not the first time Rooney has sided with the Argentine magician over his former Manchester United teammate.

Speaking on The Overlap in 2024, he acknowledged that both players are among the greatest to ever grace the game but emphasized why Messi edges it for him.
The former Manchester United and Everton star said, "I understand that people can say Messi, people can say Ronaldo – they are both incredible, probably the best two players to ever play the game. For me, Messi has just got that little bit more flair, which I like in a player, so that's the reason.”

The Messi vs. Ronaldo debate has dominated football for nearly two decades, with fans and players alike divided on who reigns supreme and while some admire Ronaldo, others, like Rooney, lean towards Messi.
