FC Copenhagen forward German Onugkha has expressed a desire to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, after turning down a call-up from Russia.
German Onugkha has rejected a chance to play for Russia, opening the door to a future with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The 28-year-old was born in Moscow, to a Russian mother and Nigerian father, and has revealed his willingness to represent his father's country after turning down a call-up to the Russian national team for their friendlies against Thailand and Vietnam.
Onugkha open to playing for Nigeria
Speaking after his Copenhagen debut against Landskrona BoIS, Onugkha explained;
“I decided to say no [to Russia’s call-up] because I wanted to focus on my next club, my future, and therefore I said that it would be better for me to stay here in Europe.

"During the next month, I will try to get a Nigerian passport because my father is from there.
"So I will go to the Embassy here in Copenhagen and see if I can get it, then we will see.”
Onugkha's decision comes on the heels of criticism from Super Eagles legend Mikel Obi, who accused foreign-born players of choosing Nigeria as a second option.
However, Onugkha has bucked this trend by actively pursuing a Nigerian passport which will make him eligible.
If the move comes to fruition, Onugkha will face stiff competition for a starting spot, with Nigeria boasting a wealth of attacking talent, including Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi and more.
Onugkha's impressive 15-goal haul for Vejle Boldklub last season caught the attention of several suitors, ultimately paving the way for his transfer to FC Copenhagen.
