A goal in extra time from Antonio Candreva was enough to give Salernitana a win over Atalanta in Serie A
Salernitana struck deep in injury time to secure a shock 1-0 win over Atalanta in Serie A to keep their hopes of surviving relegation alive.
Former Inter and Lazio man Antonio Candreva scored in the 93rd minute of the game to send Salernitana fans in the Stadio Arechi into raptures as his goal virtually secures the club’s place in the 2023/24 season.
A generally drab affair, the game was headed for the stalemate that it deserved before Candreva struck, and Atalanta will be disappointed with leaving the game without a point after creating the better chances.
How it happened
Salernitana and Atalanta cancelled each other out for most of the game, with both teams failing to create any real spark during the duration of the game.
The first half saw Atalanta create the best chances of the game, but Colombian striker Duvan Zapata spurned both of La Dea’s chances to take the lead as he failed to convert with two headers that he usually puts away in his sleep.
Thanks solely to Zapata’s profligacy, both teams went into the break on level terms at 0-0.
The second half saw a similar level of quality between both teams, but this time with Salernitana taking the attacking initiative in a reverse of the first 45 minutes.
Unlike Atalanta, the home side were able to take advantage of their ascendancy, even though the goal came in deep into the second half.
Boulaye Dia and Krzysztof Piatek both missed chances to give Salernitana the lead against Atalanta but their blushes were spared when Candreva scored a stunning goal in the 93rd minute to send a dagger through La Dea hearts and seal a 1-0 win.
