The Teranga Lions exhibited an unwavering spirit and tactical discipline throughout the match, frustrating the Brazilian side and seizing crucial opportunities to take the lead.

Senegal sent an early statement of intent to their African rivals with an impressive 4-2 victory over Brazil at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, according to captain Kalidou Koulibaly.

Koulibaly expressed immense pride in his team's mental strength, stating that their minds are already wired towards the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Ivory Coast.

Speaking after the match, Koulibaly emphasized the team's unwavering determination, stating, "We knew we had to be strong mentally.”

“We were determined to play a big game - it wasn't a friendly but a warm-up match for the African Cup of Nations,” he added.

Senegal faced an early setback when Brazil took the lead in the 11th minute, but they quickly rallied to restore parity through Habib Diallo's goal.

The Teranga Lions exhibited an unwavering spirit and tactical discipline throughout the match, frustrating the Brazilian side and seizing crucial opportunities to take the lead.

They took the lead in the second half through an own goal by Brazil's Marquinhos, followed by a sensational strike from the dynamic winger Sadio Mane.

Despite a brief comeback by Brazil, Senegal remained composed and sealed their victory with a late penalty converted by Mane.

"We're very proud of our performance. I'm very proud of the boys," Senegal coach Aliou Cissé said after the match. "When the lads play like that, we're hard to beat. We're on the right track."

With the AFCON fast approaching, Senegal's ability to remain mentally strong will be a vital asset in their quest to defend their continental crown.

Up to 15 nations have already qualified for Africa’s biggest football showpiece including Record winners Egypt, 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, former champions Algeria and Nigeria.

The 2023 AFCON to be hosted by Ivory Coast is set to take place from 13th January to 11th February 2024.

The tournament will be hosted across six venues, including the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara and Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny in Abidjan, providing the perfect backdrop for the clash of Africa's footballing elite.
