Kike Salas could face jail time amid suspicion of a betting scandal.
Sevilla defender Kike Salas has found himself at the centre of a shocking scandal that could land him in prison for up to three years.
The 22-year-old Spain Under-21s player has been arrested for allegedly receiving deliberate yellow cards during the 2023-24 season.
Spanish outlet El Confidencial, has reported that legal authorities are investigating his actions, with claims that Salas may have been part of a betting scheme.
2 Accomplices allegedly involved
The allegations state that Salas intentionally picked up yellow cards to benefit two accomplices who placed specific bets on his actions.
Legal sources via the aforementioned outlet, have revealed that the investigation focuses on the final weeks of last season, a period when Sevilla had little to play for following a disappointing campaign.
Authorities are honing in on Salas’ behaviour during Sevilla’s last nine matches, during which he received seven yellow cards.
Three of these bookings came suspiciously late in games, with two occurring in the 94th minute.
Such actions have raised eyebrows, especially as Sevilla lost their final four matches and ended the season in 14th place.
Court investigates broader implications into suspected betting scandal
A court in Seville is now examining whether other players or individuals within Salas’ circle might have been involved in the alleged scheme.
Investigators believe the pattern of late-game bookings aligns with the theory that bets were placed on precise moments when cards would be issued.
Kike Salas, a Sevilla academy graduate who joined the club at just 11 years old, had recently extended his contract until 2029.
With 54 appearances for the first team and two caps for Spain’s Under-21s, the young defender was considered a rising star.
However, his career now hangs in the balance as he faces charges that could carry a sentence of six months to three years in prison.
