Sammy Okoth has expressed his delight at the capture of the ex-Bandari defender and feels he will be a vital cog for his side in the Premier League

Shabana head coach Sammy Okoth has expressed his excitement at the signing of defender Rodgers Aloro whom he feels will add much-needed experience to his side during their Premier League campaign.

Aloro has been among a number of new players who have been training with Shabana with the hope of signing deals with the club and he seems to have convinced Okoth that he is the real deal.

Tore Bobe have not gone big on players with Premier League experience with former Bandari defender Aloro and Hillary Wandera the only additions from the top flight so far.

“Aloro will add the much-needed Premier League experience to the side. I have been excited by what I have seen from him in the friendly matches that we have played so far,” said Okoth of his new signing.

“He will help us become compact at the back which is what we really need in the Premier League. He will also lead the other younger players who lack experience of playing at this level.”

Returning to the Premier League for the first time in 17 years, Okoth feels the top flight is a different ball game compared to the second-tier National Super League (NSL) where they played expansive football, hence the need for different tactics in the 2023-2024 season.

“Our aim is to start by staying tight at the back. We have to be difficult to beat before we think about other areas. We cannot start by working on the striking when we are open at the back, that would be catastrophic,” added Okoth.

Besides Aloro, Shabana have also signed Prince Ayieko, Hillary Wandera, Mark Okola and Salomon Omolo with question marks still on the fate of striker Johanna Mwita.

“Mwita has been training with us and we had hoped to see him in our friendly matches before we decide whether to sign him or not but he fell sick during that time and we have not assessed him.

"He is a striker with Premier League experience but I am not sure about it now. I still feel we need a striker, goalkeeper, and midfielder because the players we have need help,” said Okoth.

Shabana have so far played friendly matches against KCB and Nzoia Sugar, drawing 1-1 in both of them and while Okoth has seen some positives, he feels they are still far from his ideal side.

“The good thing is that we did not lose against these Premier League teams. We contained them which gives me confidence. However, we still need to work on how to finish games because we had a problem with that. Our striking was also a bit wanting which I feel still needs work,” said Okoth.

Shabana will begin their Premier League campaign against fellow new boys Muran’ga Seal on Sunday, August 27 and with Gusii and Narok stadiums both undergoing renovation, they will be playing their home matches at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa bay.
