Shabana players Samuel Maiko and Price Ayieko have shared what motivated their 4-1 thrashing of Sofapaka on Saturday in what was their biggest victory since they were promoted

Shabana players Samuel Maiko and Price Ayieko believe a desire to prove their critics wrong and the unending support from their fans was behind their 4-1 thrashing of Sofapaka on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys showed great quality to easily dispatch a Sofapaka side that had gone three games unbeaten, ending their own run of three games without a win, that included back-to-back defeats.

It has been a tough season for Shabana and some thought they would fall again at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay but they were two goals to the good by halftime before completing the rout in the second stanza.

"Coming here, we heard from everyone that we would lose again,” said Maiko. “We showed we can compete. We are not in the position we wanted to be but we will take one game at a time."

Ayieko, meanwhile, feels the unending support from their fans played a major part in the huge win even though only 1,227 turned up on Saturday unlike in previous matches where over 4,000 would grace their games.

“It makes a big difference to have fans like we do. In the bad moments, they help us and we always want to say thank you through what we do on the pitch and try to win the game for them,” said Ayieko.

He added: “We play football for this. You play for the fans, you play for the good moments and you play for that feeling at the Stadium.”

Ezekiel Omuri and Brian Michira gave Shabana a 2-0 halftime lead before Wycliffe Mutua and Nehemiah 'Neymar' Onchiri added further gloss on the score line to give the Glamour Boys the huge victory.

The win lifted Shabana 13th on the log with 14 points, same as Sofapaka, but with a superior goal difference.
