After conceding four goals against Burnley, Sheffield United have now conceded 51 goals at home in the Premier League this season
In a season marred by defensive woes, Sheffield United found themselves on the wrong side of history as they equaled Aston Villa and Chelsea's infamous record for the most goals conceded at home in a single Premier League campaign.
Despite their best efforts, the Blades' defensive struggles have been a recurring theme at Bramall Lane throughout the season. As they faced Burnley in a crucial relegation battle, Sheffield United's quest for defensive solidity took a further blow, culminating in a historic milestone that mirrored the defensive struggles of Premier League giants.
Sheffield United collapse at home to Burnley
Burnley secured a significant victory, only their third away win of the season, against relegation rivals Sheffield United. Jacob Bruun Larsen broke the deadlock late in the first half with a well-taken volley, followed by Lorenz Assignon's goal three minutes later.
Despite Sheffield United halving their deficit through Gustavo Hamer's strike, Burnley extended their lead with goals from Lyle Foster and Johann Berg Gudmundsson. This comprehensive win leaves Sheffield United in a precarious position, bottom of the Premier League table after only three wins from 33 matches.
Historic Defensive Struggle
With the final whistle blowing, Sheffield United's defensive struggles came to the forefront once again. The Blades conceded four goals at home, marking a significant milestone in their Premier League campaign. They joined an exclusive list of teams to concede 50+ goals at home in a single English top-flight season, a record previously achieved by Aston Villa in 1935-36 who conceded 56 times and Chelsea in 1959-60 when they conceded 50 goals at home in the league.
Sheffield United's defensive frailties were laid bare as they equalled Chelsea's record for the most goals conceded at home in a Premier League season. Burnley emerged victorious in a comprehensive display, leaving the Blades to rue their defensive lapses. As the season progresses, Sheffield United will be keen to address their defensive vulnerabilities in a bid to salvage their Premier League status.
