Former Premier League striker has urged Arteta to sign a prolific striker to compete for the EPL title.

Former Everton star Yakubu Ayegbeni believes Arsenal needs to boost their attacking options with the signing of a striker if they are to seriously challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.

Victor Osimhen now has five assists this season for Galatasaray.

Arsenal's title aspirations received a boost with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Despite conceding an early goal courtesy a Son Heung-Min strike, Mikel Arteta's side rallied to secure the win, thanks to an own goal from Dominic Solanke and a nice finish from Leandro Trossard.

The win pushed Arsenal to second place in the league table, narrowing the gap to league leaders Liverpool to just four points, although Liverpool have a game in hand.

What Yakubu said

While acknowledging Arsenal's potential to compete for the title, former Premier League striker Yakubu Ayegbeni, who played for clubs like Middlesbrough and Everton, believes a key ingredient is still missing.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni at Everton

"This season is proving to be quite challenging. When you look at how Liverpool are performing, they're dropping points little by little. It's an opportunity for Arsenal to capitalise on that," Ayegbeni told Flashscore.

He added, "We've seen in the past few seasons - last year, two years ago, and three years ago - Arsenal putting pressure on Manchester City. Right now, City aren’t in the best form; they're struggling.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni's World Cup miss

“For Arsenal (to win the league), it’s just a matter of getting a striker. Once they do, I believe they can push Liverpool all the way to the end."

Ayegbeni's assessment suggests that while Arsenal's current squad is capable of competing at a high level, the addition of a prolific goalscorer could be the difference-maker in their pursuit of a first Premier League title in 21 years.
