Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Lewis Hamilton has called for F1's return to Africa after a 30-year hiatus.
Legendary Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton has expressed his wishes that the sport reintroduces the South African track to the calendar. This is not a new cause for Sir Lewis, who has been clamouring for the addition since 2020.
In response to the announcement that Las Vegas will be on the calendar from 2023, Hamilton said he is glad to see the sport grow. However, he would like to see a race run in a place with a special meaning.
"I think it will be good for the business, I think Vegas will be an awesome addition. The one I want to see is South Africa, that's the one I really want to hear next that it gets announced."
"We’re pretty much on every other continent, so why not? and ultimately, my ancestors are from there so that’s why it is important for me.” The seven-time champion said.
On the current schedule and in the past, Africa is the only continent that doesn't have a race, but this was not always the case, with the Kyalami circuit in Johannesburg last hosting a race in 1993.
