Sofapaka finally won their first match of the season following a narrow 1-0 victory against Kenya Police at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos

Sofapaka head coach Ezekiel Akwana lived up to his promise of securing maximum points against Kenya Police FC as his side delivered a first win of the season following a narrow 1-0 victory at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Saturday.

Batoto ba Mungu headed into the clash bottom of the table with just one point after five defeats and a draw but ended it with four, same as winless AFC Leopards.

Kenya Police started strongly but it is Sofapaka who broke the deadlock when Khalid Jumaan connected well with Fiston Abdoul Razak’s pass to open the scoring.

Sofapaka had shown great teamwork with Humphrey Mieno passing to Abdoul Razak whose chip found Jumaan. The midfielder then found the target with a ferocious shot.

Police’s attempts to find an equaliser were met with resistance as Akwana’s men put in an impressive defensive display to secure all three points.

Victory is a big boost for Sofapaka whose confidence had taken a beating following their poor start to the campaign and will give Akwana belief that he can turn the tide, having replaced Burundian Francis Harigingo at the start of this month.

It was the first defeat for new Police coach Zdravko Logarusic, who had secured back-to-back wins against Bidco United and Nairobi City Stars, since returning to Kenya as Francis Baraza’s replacement.

The former Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards coach is facing the same problem as his predecessor with many talented midfielders, acquired at high prices angling for a starting position.

He fielded Kenneth Muguna, Tyson Otieno and Francis Kahata in the starting line-up but they could not produce the needed creativity or goals to get his side past the struggling Sofapaka.
