The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner is not happy with the current Super Eagles squad.

Former Nigeria star Sunday Mba has hit out at the current Super Eagles squad, saying some of the players do not deserve to wear the jersey.

Mba was part of Nigeria's squad that won the 2013 AFCON in South Africa. The former Rangers man played a key role in the tournament, scoring the second goal in the quarter-final defeat of Ivory Coast.

Mba says the 2013 Super Eagles team were different

However, ten years after Nigeria's AFCON win, the current Nigeria squad looks like a shadow of the 2013 team despite boasting better talents.

The current Super Eagles squad failed woefully last year after they missed out on AFCON and failed to qualify for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The present situation of the team annoys Mba, who insists there is a massive difference between the Super Eagles he played for and the current setup.

Mba was part of Nigeria's AFCON 2013 squad

“There was unity in the camp, We were together as a family and the result started coming," Mba said.

“I wasn’t the only home-based player but I was the only one that broke into the team.

“The foreign-based players treated us well. There was no discrimination, and the late Stephen Keshi made sure of that," Mba added.

However, the ex-Bastia man says the current Super Eagles are not like that, saying their performances have been disappointing.

Mba is not happy with the Super Eagles squad

“Our Super Eagles are not making us happy, this team is playing like they don’t care about the national team. Some of them do not merit to come to the team, and some do not merit to play," Mba continued.

The 34-year-old went on to question the selection process behind the squad, saying some of the players do not deserve to get a call-up.

“I sometimes doubt how they are selected, they are not even playing entertaining or captivating football and you will be disappointed when you watch them," Mba concluded.

However, despite Mba's criticism, the Super Eagles will get the chance to turn things around when they play their first game in March.

The three-time African champions will play their first game this year against Guinea-Bissau in a doubleheader AFCON qualifiers.
