Real Sociedad will keep their prized beyond the summer, as Marin Zubimendi rejected Liverpool.

Liverpool's summer transfer plans have faced a major setback as they have reportedly been rejected by their prime target of the transfer window, Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi.

What happened

The Reds have yet to make a single signing in the Arne Slot era at the dugout. In recent weeks, they were linked with a move for Spain international defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

They were willing to match his reported €51 million release clause and have initiated contact with the player's representative to convince him to switch the Reale Arena for Anfield.

However, multiple sources, including the reliable Fabrizio Romano, reported tonight that he has rejected Liverpool’s approach as he prefers to continue at La Reale. According to the report, Real Sociedad pressed to keep him and will now reward his loyalty with an improved contract offer.

Zubimendi has been of long-term interest to a number of top European clubs, but his attachment to his boyhood club has taken priority with each offer. He has previously rejected fellow LALIGA side Barcelona and Liverpool's Premier League title rivals Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's captain, Virgil Van Dijk, has commented on the club's inactivity in the summer transfer window. He implored the club to make acquisitions as they prepared for the long season ahead.
