Mourinho managed Rashford during his time at Old Trafford between 2016 to 2018.

Marcus Rashford's current situation at Manchester United, marked by a recent stand-off with manager Ruben Amorim, has brought renewed attention to a controversial claim made by former United boss Jose Mourinho.

During his time at Old Trafford (2016-2018), Mourinho who gave Rashford enough playing time, felt the young forward and several other players lacked "maturity."

Speaking in 2018, Mourinho grouped Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, and Luke Shaw together, suggesting they were 'spoilt kids' who had been over-protected and lacked the mental fortitude he expected.

He said, "When I say that, I mean maturity at a personal level, We are more men, we are more mature, we were more prepared to face life. We were less protected. In England, they call it "spoilt."

"Today, we're talking about 'spoilt kids'. Our children are more 'spoilt' than we were. I think kids these days have a different social life than us, and players have around them an entourage, and I mean a personal entourage, the people that surround them, that protect them more, give them more affection, more excuses. They reach maturity more slowly.

"When we talk about Luke Shaw, [Anthony] Martial, [Jesse] Lingard, [Marcus] Rashford, we're talking about kids with great potential but still lack a word I can't say but that you like a lot... they lack a bit of that.

"Character, personality, as they say in Spain as well, bad blood, that natural aggression that you had," Mourinho told Hristo Stoichkov via Talk Sports

Of that quartet, only Shaw and Rashford remain at United. However, Rashford's recent admission that he's open to a "new challenge" and his subsequent exclusion from matchday squads under Amorim have reignited the discussion surrounding Mourinho's comments.

Rashford was surprisingly dropped for United's win against Manchester City on December 15th and has since been left out of the following three matchday squads, including a 2-0 defeat to Wolves.

This starkly contrasts his initial form under Amorim, where he scored three goals in the manager's first two league games.
