The sports sector was among the industries that got an increased allocation for the 2024-25 financial year in the Budget statement read by Treasury CS Prof Njuguna Ndung’u.
Sports Ministry was among the winners in the Finance Bill 2024 (Budget) read in the National Assembly by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof Njuguna Ndung’u following a Ksh16.5 billion allocation.
The 2024-25 financial year will see the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund receive a massive boost after being allocated more than double the Ksh6.4 billion given to the sector in the 2023-24 budget.
Clustered under Sports and Tourism, the two sectors were allocated Ksh23.7 billion but Sports got the lion’s share of the funds with Ksh16.5 billion set aside for the industry while Tourism Fund got Ksh4.9 billion as Ksh2.2 billion went to the Tourism Promotion Fund.

Namwamba: National government to take charge of Bukhungu Stadium renovations
Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has confirmed that the national government will take over the renovation works currently going on at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
“We are also cognizant of the brand value of Kenyans participating and excelling in international sports arena, I propose an allocation of Ksh16.5 billion to the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund,” read Prof Ndung’u.
The allocation will be a boost to the improvement of sports infrastructure around the country with a number of stadiums currently under renovation or construction.
Kasarani, Nyayo, Kipchoge Keino and Bukgungu Stadiums are among the sporting arenas currently being worked on as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania.

Bad news for Kenyan athletes as Namwamba maintains stance on stadia closure
Kenyan athletes who have not attained Olympics qualifying standards will have to do it elsewhere as the government has maintained that Kasarani or Nyayo will not be opened anytime soon.
There is also ongoing construction of a football-only stadium in Nairobi’s Jamhuri, the Talanta Sports City Stadium, whose source of funding has not been revealed yet.
Harambee Stars were forced to play their home World Cup qualifiers in Malawi due to unavailability of venues that meet CAF and FIFA standards in Kenya but there is hope that Nyayo and Kasarani will pass inspection tests once the renovation is over.
The money will also facilitate national teams to various international events, among them the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan as well as the Safari Rally.
