The top underperformers in the Premier League this campaign.

Manchester United's recent transfer strategies have come under the microscope in a revealing analysis by Twenty-First Group, with three of their signings in the past two years being pinpointed as among the Premier League's top 20 underachievers.

This insight sheds light on the performances versus expectations for players, attributing a numerical value to their shortfall from their two-year average ratings to their current form over the last nine months.

United's Trio Under Scrutiny

At the heart of the discussion is Antony, whose performances have notably dipped, placing him as the sixth most underperforming player in the league. With a rating decrease of -119, Antony's current form is a far cry from his potential, pegging him as performing at a level akin to a lower-half Premier League player.

This analysis, per the Daily Mail, starkly contrasts with expectations, highlighting a significant gap between anticipated and actual contributions on the field.

The Broader Picture: Premier League Underperformers

The analysis doesn't just spotlight Manchester United's woes but paints a broader picture of underperformance across the league. Burnley's Josh Cullen leads the pack with a startling -160 drop, positioning him below the average Championship player's standard.

Surprisingly, Liverpool's Andy Robertson and Aston Villa's Moussa Diaby also find themselves amidst this conversation, both have seen a -122-point drop in their performance ratings.

This dip suggests a deviation from their 'World Class' status to being considered top-five league players, underscoring the fluctuations in form that even the most reliable players can experience.

Manchester United's predicament is further compounded by Casemiro and Christian Eriksen's presence on this list, with drops of -106 and -97 points, respectively. This indicates a significant decline from their peaks, reiterating the challenges United faces in getting the best out of their key players. Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella also make the list, underscoring similar recruitment and performance challenges at Stamford Bridge.

Remarkably, clubs such as Arsenal, Brentford, Manchester City, Brighton, West Ham, Everton, and Wolves have managed to avoid featuring any players in the top 20 underperformers, hinting at more stable performances or perhaps more aligned expectations.
