A Clash of Titans: Steph vs. Sabrina
In a unique showdown, Curry, the Golden State Warriors' maestro, and Ionescu, the New York Liberty's sensation, will compete in a one-round 3-point challenge. This event not only highlights the NBA vs. WNBA dynamic but also brings two of basketball's finest shooters under the spotlight.
Ionescu, fresh from setting a combined NBA and WNBA record in last year's 3-Point Contest, has thrown down the gauntlet to Curry, sparking an epic face-off.
The Rules of the Game
The competition follows traditional 3-Point Contest rules, with both players having 70 seconds to sink shots from five racks. The twist? Curry will use the NBA ball and shoot from the NBA 3-point line, while Ionescu will utilise the lighter WNBA ball from its shorter 3-point distance.
This distinction adds an intriguing layer to the contest, emphasising each shooter's adaptation to their respective leagues' standards.
“Curry is a career 42 per cent shooter from downtown... Ionescu is a 37 per cent shooter from downtown in her four-year WNBA career, but she levelled up to 44 per cent last season." Stan Son, fantasy NBA writer, per the Athletic
Despite the odds heavily favouring Curry at -250, the debate rages on whether this reflects the true nature of the competition. With prop bets galore, including streaks and combined scores, the event is ripe for analysis and speculation.
"I’m going with Sabrina on this one... It’s tough to make one-to-one comparisons between Ionescu and Curry... Ionescu holds the record." - Hannah Vanbiber, sports betting editor.
Echoing a similar sentiment, Dan Santaromita, another sports betting editor, concedes Curry's advantage but questions the odds, suggesting Ionescu's potential to surprise in this one-off format.
