Flying Eagles coach is undeterred by Group of Death label ahead of U-20 Africa Cup of Nations

The head coach of Nigeria's U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, Aliyu Zubairu, has expressed confidence in his team's readiness for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The team has been drawn into Group B alongside Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya, a group some have dubbed the "Group of Death."

What Zubairu said

However, Coach Zubairu believes that every team is tough and that the level of preparation will be the deciding factor.

"I think it's high time we stop looking at some teams as bigger while some as smaller. I don't think there is any minor opposition in Africa any longer, it all depends on your level of preparation," he said via Soccernet.

Zubairu is satisfied with the team's progress after a three-week training camp in Katsina, where he observed significant improvements.

He continued, "Going by what we observed in Katsina, the team has made a tremendous improvement in terms of blending the team and adapting a more advanced approach to matches."

When asked about facing two North African sides, Zubairu kept his tactical plans close to his chest. He also emphasised that there's no added pressure on the team.

"How to approach two Northern Africans is purely for the team's consumption. There is no pressure of any kind. All we are doing is to keep focus to achieve our first target, which is to get the ticket to the World Cup."

The Flying Eagles will now enter the final phase of preparation in Egypt, where the tournament will run from April 27 to May 18.
