The Liverpool full-back could become available on a free transfer next summer, but Barcelona have already withdrawn from the race for his signature
Barcelona fans hoping to see Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold in Blaugrana colours may be disappointed, as reports indicate the club have ruled out a move for the English defender.
Despite being available on a free transfer next summer when his Liverpool contract expires, Barcelona has opted not to pursue the talented right-back, largely due to one reason.
Barcelona prioritising Lamine Yamal's development
While Alexander Arnold's quality and experience are evident, Barcelona has made it clear that they are fully invested in developing 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, who is seen as one of the club’s brightest young talents.
They believe that signing Alexander-Arnold, a player with a heavy attacking style and occasional defensive vulnerabilities, would limit Yamal’s and potential growth, according to club sources.
Instead, Barcelona intends to keep Jules Kounde as the primary right-back, allowing Yamal to continue to flourish and contribute without the pressure of covering for his full-back in defensive phases.
Financial constraints also threaten Alexander-Arnold move
While Barcelona’s interest in Alexander-Arnold was initially sparked by his potential availability on a free transfer, the club's financial constraints ultimately played a role in their decision.
With Liverpool still in talks to extend Alexander-Arnold's contract, Barcelona is unwilling to spend on a high-wage player whose style may not align with their current needs.
They view the Englishman’s attack-minded approach as a defensive risk, and with Real Madrid reportedly leading the race for his signature, Barcelona has opted to look elsewhere.
For now, Barcelona’s right-back plans will focus on their internal options, who will also allow Yamal to develop into the world-class player they envision without the added responsibility.
