A combination of Omala and Kaddu was not enough to breach Sofapaka's resolute backline.

Despite creating a plethora of chances, record league champions Gor Mahia were held to a barren draw by Sofapaka who showed great resolve in a league clash staged at the Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday.

K'Ogalo were looking for a swift riposte after being bundled out of the FKF Cup by Kakamega Homeboyz where they were the holders of the competition and rolled out their heavy artillery as Benson Omala made a come back, partnering with Patrick Kaddu upfront.

The opening exchanges of the encounter was balanced affair with the first meaning chance of the game coming at the stroke of the half-hour mark when Omala came close to breaking the deadlock but Simon Masaka reacted quickly to deny the league's top scorer.

Sofapaka went had their chance seven minutes later when Alex Imbusia went on a lung bursting run and stung the palms of Gad Mathews in goal who parried the ball out for a corner but Batoto ba Mungu failed to capitalize as they went into the break locked in a barren draw.

Gor Mahia resumed the second half like a house on fire but were denied by the cross bar twice in quick succession with the first coming from a sublime freekick by Bayisenge that cannoned off the angle between the crossbar and the upright.

Omala was second later played through on goal by Alpha Onyango with his near post shot thundering off the bottom left post as Sofapaka breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Gor Mahia were awarded an indirect free kick when the referee's drop ball after he touched the ball was passed back to the goalkeeper by one of the defenders but Austin Odhiambo's resultant effort sailed wide.

Boniface Omondi who had just been on the pitch for a few seconds after coming on for Patrick Kaddu sent a ferocious shot that was equally matched by a brilliant save by Simon Masaka in goal in the 82nd minute as Omala's header in a minute later from Paul Ochuoga's header was ruled out for offside.
