A Super Eagles star stole the show as Nigerian champions Enugu Rangers and Remo Stars kicked off their Champions League adventure with victories.

Nigerian champions Enugu Rangers and Remo Stars have started their quest for glory in the CAF Champions League, CAF, with important wins with Super Eagles defender Ismail Sodiq in fantastic form.

Sodiq was the star in Ikenne after he scored and assisted as Remo defeated Moroccan side AS Far 2-1 in the first leg of the CAFCL preliminary round.

The versatile defender who made his Super Eagles debut under Finidi George’s short spell reminded fans of Robin van Persie’s header against Spain in the 2024 FIFA World Cup as he headed the difference maker in Ikenne.

The Sky Blues dominated proceedings in Ikenne with Sodiq at the centre stage as he delivered the peach cross that skipper Nduka towered above everyone to head home the opener.

AS FAR didn’t go down without a fight as they equalised moments later with a fantastic header of their own after the break.

However, Daniel Ogunmodede would be given a fitting gift to celebrate his new deal when Sodiq superbly got at the end of a beautiful cross to head home the winner.

Rangers overcome U.S Zilimadjou

Meanwhile, in Uyo, NPFL champions Rangers made sure it was two out of two for Nigeria with another slim victory against their hosts Zilimadjou.

Uwumiro Frank was the hero for the Flying Antelopes courtesy of his 22nd strike to give Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side a slim advantage heading into the second leg next week.

Enugu Rangers ffans celebrate

Rangers dominated the encounter from start to finish and could have won by a larger margin but for their wastefulness in front of goal.

However, the Nigerian champions will go into the second leg as favourites to go through while Remo Stars still have a battle on their hands in Morocco.
