After rejecting the chance to coach Nigeria, the former Super Eagles managerial target could be set for a huge payday in Saudi Arabia
Two-time AFCON winner Herve Renard, who was once close to taking charge of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, but ultimately turned down the offer, now seems to be setting his sights on the Saudi Pro League, where lucrative contracts from multiple clubs await him.
The Frenchman, who has made a name for himself in African and international football, could soon be managing in one of the money-spinning Saudi Pro League’s clubs.
Renard in talks with Saudi clubs
After leading Saudi Arabia’s national team to a shocking win over Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, Renard’s stock in the region has soared, with the Frenchman gaining many admirers.
Even though Saudi Arabia didn’t progress beyond the group stages of the tournament, that victory left a lasting impact on his fanbase within the country.
So much so that the former Ivory Coast manager is now reportedly being linked to two Saudi Pro League clubs; Al-Ahli and Al Qadsiah; about a possible return to the region where he once thrived.
Alongside the interest from Saudi Arabia, UAE-based Al Wasl has also reached out to Renard, who recently wrapped up his role as the head coach of France’s women’s team.
Renard's close call with Nigeria
Before his current negotiations, Renard was almost set to replace Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
According to Renard himself, The Nigerian Football Federation approached him, but he he carefully weighed the pros and cons before ultimately declining the offer.
In a recent interview, the former Zambia coach stated, I almost went to Nigeria, I weighed up the pros and cons for a few days, even a few weeks before refusing it. “It is the best offer I have had so far, but the rest didn’t suit me.”
After a deal for Renard and other targets collapsed, interim coach Augustine Eguavoen is still leading the Super Eagles, with the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Libya fast approaching.
