Stanley Nwabali is among the favourites to win the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award
Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is set to take on several big names for the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award, including Cameroonian star Andre Onana.
Nwabali nominated for CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award
The Chippa United goalkeeper has been recognised by CAF for a superb 2024 after being nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Nwabali was excellent for Nigeria at the 2023 AFCON tournament in the Ivory Coast, helping the Super Eagles reach the final against the host country.
Although Nigeria eventually lost the final to Ivory Coast, Nwabali’s impressive run in the tournament that saw the Super Eagles concede only two goals on the road to the final was enough to give him a place among Africa’s best goalkeepers.
Nwabali battles Onana, others for CAF award
The Super Eagles' number one will have to beat some of the best goalkeeping names in African football to cart home the award as he was nominated alongside several shining stars.
Nwabali will battle Manchester United’s Onana, as well as South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, Algeria’s Oussama Benbot, Ivory Coast’s Yahia Fofana, and DR Congo’s Lionel Mpasi, amongst others.
Nwabali will face an uphill battle to claim the award, but still has a good shot to become the first Nigerian goalkeeper to be named CAF goalkeeper of the year.
